The 2008 Charter Commission has been established in accordance with the City of Augusta Revised Code of Ordinances, Part 1, Charter and Related Laws, Subpart A Charter, Article II, Section 10. This section states that “unless otherwise required by municipal referendum or state law, a charter commission shall be created and elected in accordance with state law at least every ten (10) years in order to provide for citizen review of the structure of city government.”
In keeping with the intent of this section of the Charter, in May of 2007 the Augusta City Council approved Council Order #105 to place a referendum question on the November 6, 2007 municipal ballot asking the voters, “Shall a charter commission be established for the purpose of revising the Municipal Charter?" This was approved by the voters along with election of one voter from each ward to the Charter Commission. The remaining three members of the Charter Commission were appointed by the Augusta City Council.
The Charter Commission will conduct its activities in accordance with Title 30-A M.R.S.A. Section 2101, et seq.
The Charter Commission will be holding public meetings that will be listed on this web page. Public hearings will also be held to receive information, views, comments and other materials relating to its functions. Citizens are invited and encouraged to attend and to provide input.
